Variables, Pipelines, and Objects

Why PowerShell pipes objects, not just text.

Objects travel the pipeline. Pick the properties you need.

PowerShell is not just a text pipe like old shells. Cmdlets pass objects with properties. That is why Get-ChildItem | Where-Object Length -gt 1MB feels like English.

$files = Get-ChildItem .\*.txt
$files | Select-Object Name, Length, LastWriteTime
$files | Sort-Object Length -Descending | Select-Object -First 5

Store results in variables with $name. Inspect with $files[0] | Format-List * when you want to see every property.
