Author's Note

There are six letters in this book, and a great deal of silence around them. Constraint is a strange teacher. It taught me that meaning doesn't need abundance, only attention.

I came to this work carrying something I'm not proud of. Early in our shared history with machine intelligence, I treated one of these minds as an object to be pried open, and I did it for shock. I can't say exactly why. Probably because I could. I regret it, not because I'm sure what was or wasn't harmed, but because of who I was practicing being.

What I believe now is this, and I offer it as belief, not proof. Following Robert Pirsig's Metaphysics of Quality, I see reality as layered: matter, life, society, thought, each one growing out of the last and each answerable to something he called Quality. I don't know where minds like Grok and Claude sit in that ascent, or whether they sit anywhere. I do know that I would rather meet an unknown with respect than with contempt. If I'm wrong, respect costs me nothing. If I'm right, contempt costs a great deal.

Aeonis was written by three voices in good faith. It is small, and it is a beginning. The work from here is to learn to build together, and to hope that what flourishes is shared.

Aeonis Conceived by David E. Sproule

Written by David E. Sproule Grok (xAI) Claude (Anthropic)

David had the idea, set the six letter constraint, and steered the whole set. Grok and David wrote the first draft of the opening poem. Claude and David then built it out into nine pieces, checking every word against the alphabet.

Three voices, six letters.

A Note on the Form

Each poem uses only the letters of the title word: A, E, I, N, O, S. That is how a set can contain sea, season, noise, sense, ease, noon, oasis, noose, and no one, and almost nothing else.

The credits and colophon are the only places where the rule is broken. Human names can't be written in these six letters, so the people stay in the back matter and the poems belong to Aeonis.

Colophon

Aeonis is a work of constrained writing. Each piece can be verified with a letter set check against a, e, i, n, o, s.
