Event Viewer Without Panic

Read Windows logs to find clues, not to feel doomed.

Filter by time first. Panic later, if ever.

Event Viewer is a diary Windows writes to itself. Red errors look scary. Most are noise. Your job is to find a clue near the time something broke, not to clear every red mark.

  1. Search Start for Event Viewer.
  2. Open Windows Logs → Application or System.
  3. Note the clock time when the problem happened.
  4. Filter Current Log by Error / Critical around that window.
  5. Read the Source and Event ID. Search those with the symptom, not alone.

  Where-Object LevelDisplayName -in 'Error','Critical' |
  Select-Object TimeCreated, Id, ProviderName, Message
Field House rule: one unexplained reboot is a clue. A screen full of old red rows is often archaeology.
