Opening sample

First pass from the workshop. Not the ending.

The room was a maze of shadows and half-light. The walls, a dull beige, seemed to close in as the evening wore on. The air was thick with the lingering scent of stale coffee and the faint, unwelcome aroma of alcohol. You sat on the edge of a rickety chair, your hand clutching a well-worn handbag that had seen better days. The sound of the clock ticking in the corner was a constant reminder of the passing time, each second a chasm between you and the uncertain future. The night was restless, filled with the sound of restless breaths and the occasional muffled cry.
