First pass from the workshop. Not the ending.
The smell of pine needles fills the air, a sharp contrast to the hazy, distant scent of holiday cheer. You sit at the table, surrounded by the familiar faces of your family, but something is off. The laughter that usually greets you feels hollow, and the sight of the empty chair at the end of the table lingers like a cold draft. You can feel the weight of absence pressing down on you, a constant reminder of the person you miss. It's been years since their absence, yet the holidays still feel like a gauntlet. The pressure to feel joyous, to pretend everything is fine, is suffocating.
