The room was dim, the only light coming from the flickering lamp on the desk. Alberta sat there, the weight of the world pressing down on her shoulders. She had just returned from a meeting that had left her feeling raw and exposed. The air was thick with the scent of old books and the faint aroma of tea, a comfort in this moment of turmoil. Alberta had been told to apologize, but the words felt like a heavy burden. "You should have seen it coming," her colleague, Almost, had said, their voice sharp and unyielding.
