First pass from the workshop. Not the ending.
Morning had slipped into the building like a thief in the night, its first light a thin, pale finger through the blinds. Anna, her movements as brisk as her thoughts, opened her door to the chill of the crisp air. The smell of stale coffee and damp earth mingled with the scent of her daughter’s shampoo, a faint reminder of home. She stepped into the hallway, the floorboards creaking under her feet. The peeling paint on the walls seemed to whisper of forgotten promises and broken dreams. Sara, with her weathered face and purposeful gait, shuffled down the hall, her cane tapping softly against the floor.
