The stairs smelled like wet wool and radiator paint. Emma took them two at a time because the hallway light was on a timer and she was tired of being caught in the dark with her keys. Christmas lights leaked through the stairwell window, the cheap kind that blink. She did not look at them long. A small package sat against her door. No stamp she could see. Tape with EMMA in block letters. She picked it up. The cardboard was soft at the corners, like it had lived in a coat pocket.
