The mist hung low over the North Saskatchewan, a veil refusing to lift until the sun could warm it away. The river held its breath, a gentle current whispering secrets to the bank. Jess sat on the bench, her back a silhouette against the soft light. Her crossed legs and drumming fingers betrayed her attempt at stillness. Her mind was a thousand miles away, tangled in past mistakes and future anxieties. Birdsong filled the air, a chorus growing louder. It should have calmed her racing thoughts, but it only reminded her of the world moving on without her. The soft crunch of footsteps on the gravel path broke the quiet.
