Rachel’s hands, stained with grease, gripped the steering wheel. Her knuckles were white. The night air smelled of exhaust, damp earth, and a hint of rain that hadn’t fallen yet. Inside, the dim lights cast a warm glow on worn seats and faded ads. The bus lurched forward. The engine’s soft hum and the gentle rocking felt like a lullaby, but Rachel’s eyes burned. She rubbed them, trying to clear the fatigue that had been her constant companion for weeks. The scent of fresh coffee drifted from the machine in the back lounge, tempting her but offering no real relief.
