Opening sample

First pass from the workshop. Not the ending.

The door creaked on its hinges, a familiar sound that still managed to jar her senses. Alberta stepped into the small convenience store, the fluorescent lights casting a harsh, clinical glow across the worn linoleum floor. The scent of stale coffee and damp carpet clung to her, a familiar comfort that was now tinged with unease. She had always loved this place, the way it smelled, the way it felt, but today, something was different. The shelves seemed to loom more than usual, their contents arranged in a haphazard fashion that made her fingers brush against the cool metal of the candy bar she picked up.
