Jamie’s apartment was a sanctuary of clutter and silence. Stacks of books teetered on the coffee table, their pages dog eared. Unopened mail fanned out across the kitchen counter, smelling faintly of old glue. Jamie moved through this space like a hermit, her slippers scuffling against the cold floor. The only sound was the rain pattering against the window. She made her morning coffee with the careful ritual of someone with too much time. Her movements were slow, each gesture deliberate, as if she wasn’t just making coffee, but performing a ceremony. The bitter liquid filled her cup. She took a sip, the taste an unwelcome reminder of time passing.
