Opening sample
First pass from the workshop. Not the ending.
Marlene stood in the dimly lit basement, the walls slick with a thin film of water. She shone the flashlight from her phone against the concrete, the beam dancing across the floor like a cautious light show. The air was thick with the musty scent of disuse, a smell that clung to her nostrils, making her think of old books and forgotten secrets. The floorboards creaked under her boots, each step a reminder of the hidden depths below. She had noticed the seepage earlier, a faint whisper against the walls, barely noticeable but enough to pique her curiosity.
